Our Story

Hello!  We are Rick, Georjean, and Alex and welcome to our page!

We met during college and fell madly in love.  Our first weekend together we began making marriage plans!  We found that we cherish the same things in life-romance, humor and experiencing new things.  We’ve now been married more than 20 laughter filled years.  We love spending time together as a couple.  Some of our favorite things to do are going out to dinner or seeing a concert or sporting event.  We also love taking trips together to the beach! Our family was filled with joy in 2010 when adoption brought our son, Alex, into our lives.

Rick according to Georjean:  Rick is a warm and loving husband and father.  Rick loves making Alex laugh with funny faces and jokes.  Rick finds joy in playtime, telling stories and taking trips to the park and museums.  Being a dad is so natural for Rick.  His arms are just waiting to welcome another child to love.

Georjean according to Rick:  Georjean is the love of my life.  She’s a wonderful wife and mother, and has a great sense of humor.  We share a love of travel and spending time with family and friends.  She has great mommy instincts. Our children could not ask for more love and encouragement. I can’t wait to see Georjean snuggled up on the couch with both of our children, reading them their favorite bedtime story.
Family Life

We are Catholic.  We do not attend church, but many of our family traditions and values are rooted in Christianity.  We celebrate holidays with family meals and spending time together.  Christmas time is a special time for us.  Christmas Eve our family, Aunt Ann, our nephew Ben and Grandma Barb head to downtown DC to see the National Christmas Tree and share a meal together.  Christmas morning we open gifts and have a big brunch together.  We spend the rest of the day laughing, playing games and enjoying our special time together.

Values that we hold important include:  kindness, honesty, self-confidence and standing up for what is right.  We try to emulate these values in our everyday lives.  Kindness is felt and seen in our family each day.  Kind acts and words are very important to us.  A strong family needs to be honest and sincere with one another.  Self-confidence is needed to be able to stand up for what is right.

Our family was very supportive of Alex’s adoption and is equally excited to meet the newest addition to our family.  Alex is a sweet and happy little boy.  He loves exploring and figuring out how things work.  Alex has a great sense of humor and enjoys meeting new people.  How remarkable it will be to watch Alex and his brother or sister cooking up a delicious recipe in the kitchen or laughing while playing a game they have invented.  Adoption is celebrated in our home.  Alex and his sibling will have a special connection throughout their lives.

Washington, DC is a great place to raise a family!  We are surrounded by history, beautiful parks, and museums to explore.  As our family grows outings will be twice as fun.  Our children will “ooo”and “ahh” at the Fourth of July fireworks and will be excited to walk through a real rocket ship at the Air and Space Museum.  We live in a quiet neighborhood community where our children will  be able to learn how to ride a bike and play tag with the neighborhood kids.  Alex will love pushing his brother or sister on the swings at one of the nearby playgrounds.  We have large parks close by where our children will enjoy sunny days splashing in the pool or pretending to be explorers as they go on hikes and build forts in the woods.  We love to travel, whether flying to the Bahamas or driving to Virginia Beach.  Hearing our children laugh and giggle as they splash at The Great Wolf Water Park will be music to our ears.  We also enjoy time with family and friends.  Alex will love introducing his sibling to “the gang” for birthday parties and barbeques.  Time spent at home is also a blast.  We will have so much fun playing board games with Alex and his brother or sister, watching our children create pretend concerts, and laughing at our favorite movies while eating popcorn.

Rick is a foreign policy advisor in Washington DC.  Rick’s job is flexible, allowing plenty of leave to spend lots of time with the newest member of our family.  Georjean was a 5th grade teacher and  the assistant director of a preschool for 10 years.  She is now a stay at home mom, providing extra guidance and love for our children.

We welcome contact with the birth family.  Adoption creates families and a special bond between birth and adoptive families. Alex’s birth mother did not wish to meet us or have contact after placement when she made her adoption plan.  We respect her decision, but also wanted to make sure that if she ever decided to reach out she would know that we were open.  We send in photos and updates to the agency to hold in hopes that one day, when she is ready, she may reach out and make that connection.  We are open to meeting and staying in contact with the birth family (letters, email, photos, calls).  We look forward to this relationship developing over time.

Best Wishes,

Parenthood has made our relationship even stronger! We really enjoy raising our little boy, and cannot wait to make our family a little bigger!  We have so much love to share, and are excited that our family may grow once again through adoption.  Adoption takes great strength and we look forward to talking to such a brave person.  Thank you for learning about our family.  We look forward to hearing from you, getting to know each other, and welcoming you into our lives in a way that makes you feel most comfortable.

With Warm Wishes, Rick, Georjean and Alex
